Artitec 6870346 USSR light tank BT7 BT-7 sovjet army green command tank
Ready built and painted model.
Information about the tank:
- BT stands for Bistrochodny Tank meaning something like fast tank and in fact the BTs were fast, especially when the were driving on their wheels without tracks.
- The BT was based on the development of the M1928 tank of the US American engineer John Walter Christie. Russia bought two M1931 tanks which were shipped as tractors to Russia as the delivery of weapons was illegal.
- Since September 1931 the first BT prototypes were produced in the Sovjet Union.
- The BT-S and BT-5 tanks were equipped with a gun in contrast to earlier versions which had a machine gun only.
- The BTs were planned to be used in tank groups behind enemy lines, so the high speed was important even as this meant a light armour.
- Due to experiences in combat the red army asked for a welded version with sloped sides which resulted in the BT-7 which had stronger engine and gear as well.
- There were also U or TU versions as command tanks equipped with radio in the rear of the turret and a frame antenna on top of the turret. These were BT-5U, BT-5TU, BT-7U and BT-7TU versions.
- BT tanks were used in the Spanish civil war, in the war against Finnland, against Japan and in the war against Germany.
- The chassis of the BT tank with its extraordinary independent wheel suspension was used for the development of the famous T-34 tank as well.
