During the battle of Stalingrad, the sovjet army was sure, that they had to fight against strong german fortifications and new powerful tanks.

So on January 4th 1943 they ordered an assault gun which had to be developed within 25 days, equipped with a 152 mm M1939 gun.

The chassis of early models was based on the KW-1 tank while later models were based on the newer Iosef Stalin tanks.

The ISU-152 was built as a counter weapon against german Panther and Tiger tanks.

In July 1943 a SU regiment with 12 ISU-152 was used in the battle of Kursk where they destroyed 12 german Tiger and 7 Ferdinand tanks. Afterwards it became known as the "Zwerroboi" (Animal killer).

By exchanging the 152 mm gun with a 122 mm gun, model 1931-7 the model ISU-122 was created to fight against german tanks on long distances.
