Information about the tank:

Since 1942 the company Alkett built the tank hunter „Hornisse“ (hornet) with a 8.8 cm anti tank gun equipped with a light and open armour on the „Geschuetzwagen III/IV“.

The „Geschutzwagen III/IV used the chassis of Panzer IV (tank mark IV) and the engine and gear of Panzer III (tank mark III) as an armoured gun motor carriage for heavy guns.

The engine was installed in the middle to provide place fort he gun crew in the rear part.

Adolf Hitler himself ordered to change the name to „Nashorn“ (rhinoceros) later as the name „Hornisse“ seemed to be to harmless for him.
