​The super heavy siege mortar "Karl" was used to attack heavy fortresses like Sevastopol and Brest-Litovsk in Russia for example.

The "Geraet 040" had a barrel of 60 cm in diameter while the "Geraet 041" had a barrel of 54 cm in diamater but a longer barrel for a better firing range.

Once the 60 cm barrels were exhausted they should be replaced by the 54 cm barrels with a longer firing range.

The devices had the following names:

• Adam (später Baldur)
• Eva (später Wotan)
• Odin
• Thor
• Loki
• Ziu
• Fenrir
