88 mm Flak
The so called „Acht-Acht“ („Eight-Eight”) was an anti-aircraft gun (Flugabwehrkanone – Flak) which became famous in world war II for the successes as anti-tank gun.
The 88 mm Flak 18 was developed by Krupp engineers who worked for Bofors in Sweden.
This gun was in use since 1933.
Its gun barrel was made of one piece. It was turnable, based on a cruciform mount.
The successor, the Flak 36 had a gun barrel which was deveided in three parts, so it was more cost efficient to exchange the mostly worn part near the chamber.
The Flak 37 had a better communication system between the gun and the control desk of the weapon.
The performance and mount of these three models were the same.
The anti-tank variant was the Panzerabwehrkanone (Pak) 43 / 41. It had nearly the same cruciform mount but was equipped with a shield for protection of the crew.
This variant is used for the German STRATAK Panzerschlacht tank battle tabletop game as stationary weapon.
Later this gun was mounted on a 2-wheel mount which had the nick name “Scheunentor” as it was very clumsy. Anyway the soldiers liked it because of it outstanding performance.
The 88 mm Flak 41 was developed by Rheimetall-Borsig. It was a completely new development because of more powerful aircraft.
It had a longer gun barrel with a higher muzzle velocity and a higher shot elevation.
